Before Choosing a Product: Prepare Your Corporate Protection Review
Start with the business question
For an Ontario business owner, a corporate protection review can begin with an agenda rather than a product shortlist. Use the meeting to clarify the business purpose, examine existing arrangements and identify questions that need an explanation.
This checklist applies general consumer guidance to a business discussion. It does not establish that a corporation needs or qualifies for any product, and it is not an FSRA endorsement of a corporate solution.
Make a simple preparation note
- Purpose: Describe the business responsibility you want to discuss. Keep the issue separate from a preferred product.
- Existing arrangements: Note what is already in place and what remains uncertain. Do not assume that an unanswered question proves a gap.
- Questions: Ask how any proposed policy works, where its limits are, what exclusions and terms apply, and which features are guaranteed or non-guaranteed.
Understand the guidance
The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario's consumer guidance describes a financial needs analysis using assets, liabilities and income needs. It lists explanations of policy operation, limits, exclusions, terms and guaranteed versus non-guaranteed features among industry best practices. Its distinction between best practices and legal requirements matters; a best-practice label alone does not establish a statutory rule.
Prepare without sharing private information
Keep your preparation note private. Use an initial enquiry to arrange a conversation, not to send financial records, policy documents or health information. Individual advice belongs in a needs review with an appropriately licensed advisor.
