Your Life Changed. Did Your Protection Plan?

Life changes can prompt useful questions

Life rarely stays exactly as it was when an insurance policy was first arranged. Marriage, separation, welcoming a child, purchasing a home or changes in financial responsibilities can all be reasons to revisit an existing protection plan.

A review does not automatically mean that something is wrong or that another product is needed. It is an opportunity to understand your current arrangements and consider whether they still reflect your intentions.

Start with what you already have

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada provides general information about life insurance, including considering financial needs and understanding beneficiary designations. Its official life insurance guidance is a useful educational starting point.

Before considering changes, think through these questions:

  • Existing coverage: What policies or arrangements are currently in place, and what financial responsibilities were they originally intended to address?
  • Life circumstances: Have your dependants, household commitments, debts or other responsibilities changed since you last reviewed your arrangements?
  • Beneficiary details: Who is currently designated to receive policy proceeds, and do those details reflect your present intentions?
  • Unanswered questions: Which policy terms, exclusions, costs or administrative details would you like an appropriately licensed insurance advisor to explain?

Understand before making decisions

Reviewing an existing policy is different from deciding to replace or cancel it. Changes can have financial, contractual and other consequences. Avoid making decisions based only on a general checklist or an assumption that newer arrangements are necessarily better.

An appropriately licensed advisor can help explain available options and relevant considerations in the context of your circumstances.
